Merci, Gracias, Danke, Mahalo, Arigato, Thanks Y’all!

I’m a few days late with this week’s Thanksgiving post. I was feeling a bit blue, thinking about having to get a molar filled tomorrow. But then I remembered how incredibly blessed I am. I have good teeth—well for the most part. We have good insurance and I have a good dentist. If only I would have remembered what my grandfather always said…be true to your teeth today and they won’t be false to you tomorrow. Anyway, on that note, I’ll finish by saying, God is good and I’m thankful for his abundant blessings. And remember, next week is the big day!

November is a very special month. It’s the time of year when people purposefully take the time to reflect on all the things they are thankful for. The Bible it filled with verses of scripture solely devoted to giving thanks to our Almighty God for his glorious blessings. I have compiled a list of thanksgiving verses to reflect on; one for each day of the month. The verses are divided into weeks and since today is the first day of November and there are only three days left in the week, here are the first three verses.  

Week One

 

Thursday, November 1, 2012 – Psalm 69:30

I will praise the name of God with a song. And will magnify Him with thanksgiving.

Friday, November 2, 2012 – 1 Chronicles 16:34

Oh, give thanks to the Lord, for He is good! For His mercy endures forever.

Saturday, November 3, 2012 – Colossians 2:6-7

As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith, as you have been taught, abounding in it with thanksgiving.

 

Thanksgiving Writing Project For Kids

The coming week brings my favorite day of the holiday season…Thanksgiving! I consider myself an extremely thankful person. Why? Because I know what it’s like to be a sinner saved by grace and I know that someone had to die to save me from my sins. Who died? Jesus died; and for that I am thankful.


For many years as I decorate for the Thanksgiving holiday, I display a piece of writing in my kitchen that was done by my daughter when she was in the second (?) grade. (My daughter, by the way, is turning 19 this month. Happy birthday Casey!) I love the writing so much because it’s a treasured memory of course, but also because she has a special way with words. Here is what she wrote:

So many of us stay-at-home moms will have our children home from school this entire next week. What on earth can I do to keep the little darlings busy? Why not have them do this simple and easy writing exercise! Here’s what you do. Think of a topic and that will be the title of the work; such as autumn, Thanksgiving, Christmas…let them be creative. Then have them write what they think about, concerning that topic, using the five senses; sight, smell, touch, taste, sound. Let them decorate their work and viola, you have a memorable keepsake and you’ve given the kids a writing lesson all at the same time…easy as pumpkin pie!

I can’t wait to do this exercise with my youngest son. If you have a chance to do this with your own children I would love for you to share their work in the comments section!

Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good. His love endures forever.

It was a sad kind of strange Thanksgiving for our family. We had to spend it without my father, Teddy. No, he’s not dead! He is in Hell however…Minnesota! No offense Minnesotans, it’s just that being anywhere that ain’t Texas, and not even having your family to console you is Hell indeed. It depressed us so, that my mom and I couldn’t even bring ourselves to cook a Thanksgiving meal. Well, maybe we’re kind of lazy too. Nevertheless, we loaded up the troops and headed for Black Eyed Pea. I have to admit it was quite good too!
Teddy called during our meal with a humorous story. He and his partner Jim, having vowed to not shave or cut hair until the dreaded Minnesota job is finished, went out on a quest to find a free meal at one of the local homeless missions since they looked the part of men needing a helping hand. He was joking. We all got a good laugh out of it.

He will yet fill your mouth with laughter and your lips with shouts of joy.

Thank You God for laughter. Thank You God for allowing me to grow up in a family that always laughed, even when all we had to laugh at was each other. Thank You God for blessing me with a husband and children that make me laugh daily. Thank You God for friends that I can laugh with. Thank You God that I have a Savior who gives me the ability to laugh in the face of adversity. Thank You God for Jesus!
